A
note from the founder & director.
I started Village United two years ago after observing how the needs
of students of color were being ignored in Berkeley. Looking at the
data, it is clear that a disproportionate number of African American
and Latino students are failing at Berkeley High School. These students
have low tests scores and each year accrue a considerable amount of
disciplinary infractions. This leads to low self esteem and morale as
well as low retention rates for students of color at Berkeley High.
Village United is also working with students in various other high schools
throughout the Bay Area. Village United was conceived in order to turn
this situation around.
I know how challenging this work is but because of the positive results
for all, I am committed to this work. Right now Village United is working
with 25 students, tracking their attendance, grades as well as providing
them with tutors, mentors and college career counseling. We are also
working with families helping them to understand the developmental stage
of their children and how best to meet their needs in order to secure
their success in school. We provide students and families with trainings,
workshops and support groups. We also provide students with funds to
take SAT/ACT preparatory sessions as well as campus visits to colleges
of their choice.
Because Village United Coalition is a organization, we are
seeking funds to continue the work we are doing with young people. Much
of the funds used so far have been through personal donations and private
donors. In order to continue our work with these students, I am reaching
out on behalf of Village United to secure funds for tutors, mentors,
guest speakers, field trips and the asundry of other activities hosted
by our group.
